On 8th of April at Cultural Center in Pitanga we had a great opportunity to hear for the first time on this continent an original and old instrument csakan, originated from Hungary. Natalie Houtman and Raphael Collignon searched trough old partitures to find the pieces composed for it. Most of the compositions are form the first half of the 19th century, and we heard Kraehmer, Gebauer, Schubert, Strauss, Farbach and Mozart. Two compositions were accompanied by Puducherry Flute Quartet. Technical perfection at playing instruments and choice of musical pieces were able to carry us back in time.

Warm Wednesday night with the crescent moon over amphitheater at Mantirmandir, audience waiting patiently in expectation of Small steps. Out of darkness and silence it started. Some flickering lights and soft children whispering in echo, and with music it seemed as ethereal beings would be passing on the rhythm... appearing and disappearing, changing shapes and moves, almost not touching grounds. One song, one story faded into another, one followed by the other, until angels arrived... to sing in a dance, a delicate and beautiful song with young colorful spirits... one could think that whole performance is just a beautiful dream, nurturing our sense with images, settings, choreography, costumes... and... sound, oh, what an excellent soundtrack!Read more mp3/2010_02_24_performance_small_step_amphitheater_matrimandir_ed.mp3&totalTime=8:15 Tuesday, 02 March 2010

On the 1st of February 2010 at the Sri Aurobindo Auditorium in Bharat Nivas, Gordon Korstange presented a Carnatic flute recital accompanied by Umayalpuram Mali (mridangam) and Sri Balasundaram (violin)."I think about the 25 years I've been learning Carnatic music. I've had to become a musician without any background in western music; have constantly felt ignorant of things Indian musicians take for granted; have constantly wondered whether my music is authentic; and have spent most of my time hidden away in my practice room with a tanpora and photos of famous singer-saints on the walls alongside those of Sri Aurobindo and Mother. Does it sound a little like doing Their Yoga in the USA? Yes, a similar sense, often, of dislocation, of gap between inner and outer lives, of manifold insecurities in the face of a materialistic culture--a culture which is us. My quavering aspiration sends flute sounds floating out on Lake Winnepasakee, but who's really listening?" - Gordon KorstangeAn excerpt from 'Collaboration - Journal of the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, Summer 1995, Vol. 21, No. 1. mp3/2010_02_01_live_music_carnatic_flute_recital_gordon_korstange_auditorium_01_ed.mp3

Gregorian chants were echoing at Pitanga on Sunday the 14th of February. Anandamayi, Andrea, Ane, Elsa, Irene, Carl and Denis with their beautiful voices prepared an unique evening of cappella singing. Director Eugeen Liven d'Abelardo told us few things about the history of Gregorian chants, which is a functional music for liturgical use. For centuries it was passed by oral tradition, and after they start to use scriptorium to record it, but no notation, as we know today. Gregorian chant was until 1968 the official chant of the Roman church. The selection of monastic chants for that evening was mostly from 8th and 9th centuries.Click here to download the program. mp3/2010_02_14_live_music_auroville_cappella_gregoriana_pitanga_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=57:39 Wednesday, 17 February 2010

During the LFA (litter-free Auroville) campaign, AurovilleRadio was invited to participate in the exhibition room called stArt of Certitude's dome. We took this opportunity to produce a sound in order toawaken people's awareness of noise pollution. The manner in which people began to listen was quite imaginative. With the participation of Newcomer Marc, organiser of the exhibition and a designer, we imagined a box where everybody could enter, listen to the sound and be totally cut off from outside, in order to be fully focused on sounds. The result: a strange sort of soundproof cardboard box called “Sound Space”, a mysterious and darkened sound experience with a long waiting line attended mostly by kids..Read more mp3/2010_01_29_interview_lfa_noise_pollution_chloe_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=4:45 Monday, 15 February 2010

One of the highlights from last Friday´s Litter Free Auroville was the amazing Trashionshow. The numerous talented designers attended a workshop one week before, where they got input, material and ideas how to create fashion out of trash. The result was simply outstanding: They transformed vinyl records, juice boxes, cassette tapes, bubblewrap, rice sacks, used fashion magazines and plastic bags into creations just designed for the catwalk. For the final day and last part of the Auro Olympics was the Run for the Heart on 13th of January. All the children were excited about that race for over a month, because it was postponed due to the monsoon rain from December, and that is the race nobody wants to miss it. Some children were preparing themselves for long time for it. And the final day came! Hot sunny day, but that didn't stop the ehtusiasm of maybe small by the size, but big on their will, runners. Parents and friends came to cheer them up, and the feeling of excitment was contagious. We recorded some soundscapes of the race itself and some short interviews with children and their parents.. mp3/2010_01_13_interview_people_run_for_my_hearth_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=25:09 Thursday, 04 February 2010

The 29^th of January was indeed a different Friday for Auroville. It started early in the morning with meditation, and after school the children and many adult Aurovilians collected litter along the roads... which all lead to Certitude where the main action took place throughout the day. In a conversation with Chandra, Ribhu and Mira who were three of the many active facilitators for this day's events, some interesting facts were uncovered: the target is to create a team for a platform to create a change. It is ongoing, ideas and work, to reduce waste. Each of us can participate: the way we choose to acquire our food, and how we handle our waste, becoming aware that we can't just 'throw it away' as there is no 'away.' . mp3/2010_01_29_interview_litter_free_auroville_mira_ribhu_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=20:14 Wednesday, 03 February 2010
