SmallSteps is an initiative funded by Upasana design studio, against the use of plastic bags. The core philosophy at Upasana is to design for social development. Through small steps Upasana has given employment opportunity to more than 200 woman from villages in and around Auroville. These woman help in making cloth bags which are a good substitute to plastic. The USP of these bags are that they are compact and portable. By hooking them on to bags, belts, key rings, etc one is constantly reminded to say no to plastic.

Monday, 02 August 2010

On Monday 26th July 2010 in Town Hall conference hall we had a chance to hear interesting presentation about Beema bamboo as an ecological and economical source of energy by Pashi and few others. . This bamboo is a native Indian specie which has been proven to grow well under our local conditions and which possesses many assets – very good yield , it has a high biomass content, as well as a good pulp and a high calorific value (4000 K cal/kg). It therefore acts as a carbon sink as it can absorb CO2 3 to 4 times more than trees;

Read more Thursday, 08 July 2010

"In those days, the surrounding villages were a sad sight. There was a group of us, we began to look at what we could do. But it wasn't until we were joind by Ambu and Morris, who told us: What you are doing is looking like charity, you can't do this for a long time. It would be more in the spirit of Auroville to do development work". Bhavana, been in Auroville since 1971 and the founder of Village Action Group, talks about the difference between the two, how the project evolved over the years – and also how she came to realize that Auroville is her true home indeed. Read more Thursday, 20 May 2010

Read more mp3/2010_04_22_interview_jacques_dentist_french_ed.mp3&totalTime=29:12 Tuesday, 27 April 2010

Chrais, a Dutch consultant with the FAMC and Farm Group in Auroville, is facilitating a two-day workshop (on 23/24 of April) called “The Whole System in the Room” on all things related to food and agricultural value chains. He estimates that Auroville's dream of agricultural self-sustainance is currently only at 10-20% of its capacity, and is working to increase that by engaging further with local farmers and addressing the serious problem of rapidly sinking ground water levels. In this interview, he talks about his future vision for a sustainable agricultural action plan in Auroville, and the spiritual motivations that drive him. mp3/2010_04_20_interview_chrais_on_food_and_farming_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=7:22 Tuesday, 20 April 2010

Adhi, born in Edayanchavadi, works in the Botanical Garden, which aims to educate people about local plants and how they remain green even in the dry conditions. He has introduced the use of native species in Auroville rather than exotic plants which need lots of water and maintenance. Local children from 150 government schools in the region come to the botanical garden and are taught about the nursery and alternative energy, plant trees and are encouraged to take plants home to create gardens. There are also attempts to produce and conserve seeds of native Indian vegetables – original heritage seed independent of commercial genetically-modified seed. mp3/2008_10_03_interview_radio_program_toward_sustainability_adhi_botanical_garden_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=9:50 Tuesday, 20 April 2010

It is the occasion for Auroville residents to find a new momentum toward the construction of the City. During the LFA (litter-free Auroville) campaign, AurovilleRadio was invited to participate in the exhibition room called stArt of Certitude's dome. We took this opportunity to produce a sound in order toawaken people's awareness of noise pollution. The manner in which people began to listen was quite imaginative. With the participation of Newcomer Marc, organiser of the exhibition and a designer, we imagined a box where everybody could enter, listen to the sound and be totally cut off from outside, in order to be fully focused on sounds. The result: a strange sort of soundproof cardboard box called “Sound Space”, a mysterious and darkened sound experience with a long waiting line attended mostly by kids..Read more mp3/2010_01_29_interview_lfa_noise_pollution_chloe_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=4:45 Monday, 15 February 2010

The 29^th of January was indeed a different Friday for Auroville. It started early in the morning with meditation, and after school the children and many adult Aurovilians collected litter along the roads... which all lead to Certitude where the main action took place throughout the day. In a conversation with Chandra, Ribhu and Mira who were three of the many active facilitators for this day's events, some interesting facts were uncovered: the target is to create a team for a platform to create a change. It is ongoing, ideas and work, to reduce waste. Each of us can participate: the way we choose to acquire our food, and how we handle our waste, becoming aware that we can't just 'throw it away' as there is no 'away.' . mp3/2010_01_29_interview_litter_free_auroville_mira_ribhu_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=20:14 Wednesday, 03 February 2010

Uma has woven the thread of creativity utilizing the contents of the unit's waste barrels, the goal zero waste. Upasana's employees, men and women of the villages, have successfully produced usable, unique items of beauty entirely of plastic, paper and cloth waste, caught by Uma's clarity and confidence. mp3/2009_12_21_interview_uma_kapas_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=9:56 Monday, 01 February 2010

Productions presented an epic theatrical gesture in conjunction with Litter Free Auroville last Friday at the Visitors' Centre. Johnny's began with a witty introduction of human history (which sadly managed to destroy so much of what exists.) With the substance we know as plastic, its use became misuse; Mother Nature became the target. 'Escape From Mt. Rubbish' was played with a cast of thirty children, who understand the well the context of Litter Free Auroville and the campaign toward that end, which takes place on Friday 29. The audience had lots of laughter all the way through the play, and gave the players a standing ovation at the end. The final message: avoid the use of plastic. . mp3/2010_01_22_play_escape_from_mt_rubbish_ed.mp3&totalTime=45:49 Saturday, 23 January 2010

Well, time to break the mystery has come: Auroville does not so good at the level of solid waste. Action is needed and this is the goal of the NGO SOMA waste management, along with Ecoservice: organizing a big campaign on the 29th of January to bring awareness and to get things change. This is no longer a surprise, this day is supposed to be big, as big as the issue. Let's hear Gilian, from Ecoservice, presents her organization and the actual situation of Auroville toward waste, then Meera and Chandrah, coordinators of SOMA, talk about the day itself. mp3/2010_01_04_interview_soma_ecoservice_wasteprogram_english_ed.mp3&totalTime=16:16 Saturday, 23 January 2010
