Out of many events in
Auroville which community, guests and volunteers can witness, book events are rare. At Pitanga on Monday evening was one of latest, a introduction of debut novel of a young author from Chennai Arja Rajam. Arya herself shortly described the story of the book - Blood, Sweat and Tears which talks about hardship of professional dancers, ballerinas. Jill, Anu and Arya herself have read few passages from the novel. The introduction was followed by questions and answers session, and distribution of the copies to the audience

B explains the significance of the recent publication But It Is Done' in today's interview. 'But It Is Done' is a small but mighty book, composed by Dr. Kireet Joshi, a small volume revealing the reason for the Mother's Agenda as well as the reason for creating Auroville. This volume contains direct quotes of the Mother from the Agenda. It also speaks of the fact that although the Mother's work is done, our collaboration is definitely and obviously very much needed.

On the 5th of May N&N announced an open talk by Sraddhalu at SAWCHU, but the Working Committee canceled the talk about the controversy surrounding Peter Heehs book on Sri Aurobindo. Columbia University Press released it in 2008. Controversy followed. We talked with Loretta about the ban, about the book, about Peter Heehs, about Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The Mother said that "in peace and harmony the eternal manifests. The first thing that you have to base everything upon is harmony. When there is disharmony things don't work." Read more

Akatha Kahani or untellable story is a presentation on Kabir, where three sisters attempt to showcase this special alchemy between Kabir and his listeners by sharing their individual encounters with Kabir. One wrote a book for young adults, another sings her songs passionately and yet another expresses Kabir's impact on her through Bharatnatyam. Akatha Kahani, features Jaya Madhavan author of Kabir the weaver poet book, Bindhumalini a singer trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani music and Archana, a Bharatnatyam dancer and French translator.

Monography on Poppo Pingle work in architecture was literally "launched" by Poppo himself with the device he has constructed for that occasion, and with it brought smiles on the gathered faces. The book, authorized by Mona Doctor Pingel was released by Ms.Malika Sarabhai, one of the publishers and Dr.Karan Singh, and is first of the series of monographies on Auroville architects. Mona herself briefly explained reasons that inspired her and on what she has focused in it. The architects are following the Mother's words - Less talk, more work. Read more

International Teahour of the Edible Book and MailArt exhibition Bake a Book a Day was presented by Peter Netmail in Aurelec Art Gallery. The International Edible Book Festival is a creation of Judith A. Hoffberg and Béatrice Coron. Judith got the idea over a Thanksgiving turkey with book artists in 1999. Béatrice created www.books2eat.com where despite the distances everybody can enjoy worldwide's creations. They contacted friends and colleagues; their first event happened in year 2000. Since then the festival continues as an annual sensation.

On Thursday 23rd at 5 pm in Cinema Paradiso - Town Hall, Anais Woin in collaboration with French Pavilion and CIRHU presented "History of ancient manuscripts". Anais is an historian, researcher at CRNS (Centre National Recerche Scientifique), specialist of the Christian Kingdom of Ethiopia during medieval and modern periods. She works with manuscript texts, most of them being consulted in the churches and monasteries of the Ethiopian highlands. Those manuscripts are still part of a living culture and much related to oral traditions.

Tim Wrey launched his book 'Footsteps through the Salad' yesterday at Town Hall. The book is a collection of well-researched and interesting articles about the wildlife of Auroville and some of the natural phenomenon associated with the area. It will be available in the bookshops in Auroville and copies will be provided to schools for their libraries. Tim took the opportunity to thank SAIIER, the publisher, and also the people who helped him with material, encouragement, suggestions and feedback.

Talking about Anu's book 'The God Enchanter' so recently published, as well as other recited excerpts, the question came up while at Bharat Nivas on humanity, hardly to be avoided. According to Sri Aurobindo, transition takes place when every man recognizes his sacred state. Tolerance for one another, deeper recognition of the other as equally sacred should take place in little shifts in our attitude individually.
