"We are Sound" Workshop
One day before the cyclone Thane, on the 29th of December 2011, the Italian musicians Ludovica and Paolo offered a music workshop in the Life Education Centre of Auroville, teaching Tamil girls how to express themselves through sound and rhythm. During this rainy morning the LEC girls enjoy the flavour of gypsy music performed by Ludovica and Paolo, sang African songs of joy, learned to play different instruments, to make sound with their own bodies, while dancing and laughing with the diversity of activities developed during the workshop. Mutation: dans les coulisses...
Et voici un son provenant directement des coulisses du spectacle "mutation in progress"... Il y a avait Ana la danseuse, enceinte de 7 mois, suspendue dans les airs par un long drap au beau milieu d'une salle circulaire. Aussi tout autour, des sculptures lumineuses flottants dans les airs, rappelant le passage de la chenille au papillon. Les chuchotements c'est nous, Marie Claire (sculpture), Christoph (vidéo) et moi (son) face à un petit problème technique... Après la performance une jeune journaliste en herbe nous a dérobé le micro... Read more

The Farewell to Noam
New Kalabhumi, not by the spirit but by the new bright colors on the sits, lights, stage, and roof over snack area. And Sunday night 28th of August was a special night for the Brand New Band, since that was the night to say goodby to Noam, who left Auroville. A musically inspired band of young teenagers was great on expressing themselves trough instruments, but for vocals it was obvious that time for rehearsal was too short. It didn't take long for enthusiastic public to rock on evergreen rock close to the stage area. Read more

Installations and Exhibitions
The Auroville FIlm Festival '11 will be bigger than in 2009! The number of locations where it will be happening, the installations, exhibitions: a group of video artists from Berlin gifted to Film Festival '11 fancy installations, which most likely will be on display at La Terrace at Solar Kitchen and at Town Hall. We can expect two exhibitions; one at Kala Kendra, the joint work of Marie Claire, Anna, Chloe and Christoph, their collaborative work of dance, sculpture, sound and video... in Bharat Nivas, artwork of students on Human Unity. Weekend in Tango
Mango and Tango are words for this weekend, which, weather wise might be dry and hot. Dance, not only tango lovers, can join the workshop for tango at Arka on Saturday as Sunday, morning and afternoon, since it doesn't require partners but just socks. Both days will end by milonga - tango party. About workshop we talked with Aurevan. On the other side Solitude Farm invites us all to MANGO Saturday. Beside delicious mangoes they would like to share with us also knowledge on permaculture gardening, and inspire us to start thinking to grown our own food at our homes. Read more

Mangos
Solitude Farm would like to invites us for their MANGO day at Solitude on Saturday. A nice selection of organic mangos will be starting to get ripe by then and so we can make our pick. On Saturday there will be also a tour of the farm starting at 11am and after it lunch . At 9am, also this Saturday there will be the first of a number of informal training sessions that will take place on Saturdays covering their work in natural farming and permaculture, hoping to inspire people to get involved with Auroville farms or start their own gardens. This year their natural farming red rice, non-tilled and direct sown without the use of any machine, achieved a yield that was close to a good normal yield by conventional organic farming. We had a rare opportunity to interview Kalki, main actress in new and unique Tamil film , done by two women - director Vijaya Padma and producer ‘Punnagai Poo' Geetha. This film brings on screen the feelings of the third sex in a realistic way. As Kalki says Love is the thing that connect us all, and for any individual the most important factor is to accept oneself, and embrace with love. Drumming
Hot summer Saturday afternoon didn't stop African students to hold a drumming gathering on the land appointed for Africa House - Pavilion of African Culture in International Zone. Mohanam Sound Crew hosted them with instruments and exchange rhythms with Africans. Interesting, and very lively combination soon attracted crowd which was passing by on their way to Matrimandir...and lifted up quite some feet. Read more

Cultural Exchange

Unity Pavilion was again in a spirit of cultural exchange on Saturday 28th of May. A group of Rwandan students from Annamali University in Chidambaram, celebrated with Aurovilians their traditions of singing and dancing. What started with rhythms, songs, and cultural dances- as an introduction to their rich African heritage- followed with embracing the audience to move to the rhythms of the continent. The evening also exposed the visions of the Africa House, Pavilion of African Culture here in Auroville. Besides drumming and dancing, talks and poetry spoken by Levite from Kenya, currently a student at Erode University, created an environment to raise socio-cultural issues. Read more

Africa on Saturday
Saturday shouldn't be boring at all because Africa House in International Zone prepared whole day in African spirit. They will start at 3pm with drumming circle and blessings on African Land in International Zone, behind Secretary house. At 5pm at Certitude sports ground will be lively since there will be two friendly matches between Auroville and African students in football and basketball. They sincerely hope - both teams, that you will come to cheer them up. AT 8pm at Unity Pavilion in International Zone African students from the area prepared cultural event which will include dances, songs, story telling, poems ...and more...We all know that Africans stay up long at night so we can expect a surprise or two...

Africa United in Auroville
For Africa Culture Day this Saturday 28th of May, we share a selection of songs to get you into the rhythm of the drum loving and moving continent. Different School
In the short interviews with parents of children who were visiting Mohanam Cultural Center Kindergarden this year Christine found out which is the main reason for parents to choose this one over traditional schools in the area. On Friday annual performance young children of kidnergarden prepared rich cultural performance about the activities they were working on throughout the year. As usual, parents, friends, neighbors were there loudly encouraging young children to be brave on the stage.

Parvathy Baul and Latif Bolat on Stage
It felt like the spirit of the Divine had investigated the Sri Aurobindo's Auditorium at Bharat Nivas while Latif Bolat and Parvathy Baul sang and read mystic poetry during their common concert on Saturday April 30th evening. The Sufi Scholar and Musician ended his stay at Auroville offering some talks on the history of the Sufism journey, reading contemporary poems and playing some of his compositions. To finish his play, Latif Bolat chose a song based on the "Hiroshima Poem" reminding that "mysticism is not a dry abstract something out here" but it has been involved in society, social justice and human goodness since always.Read more

Heart Beyond Borders
In magical atmosphere of Krtashraya the Aurodham Gardens, in front of numerous public both Latif and Parvathy took us on a spiritual journey trough music. Parvathy accompanied herself on ektara(one stringed baul instrument), duggi(clay drum) and nupur(anklet), dancing, and we could feel her voice, reaching high pitches, as it is coming from very far, and yet so close to our hearts. "Songs from the Heart Beyond Borders" was the tittle of two concerts Parvathy Baul and Latif Bolat gave to Auroville and Pondicherry audience. We couldn't look for the better conclusion of Latif Bolat visit in Auroville with hist talks and lecture on Sufi poetry,philosophy, art and music, on historical background of Turkey, and on spiritual essence of Islam.

Brand New Band Rocks!
It took not more than two notes for all hands to start clapping right after the Brand New Band began playing and singing with the rhythm of "Life is Life" (Opus) at Kalabhumi, on Thursday April 29th. Art Bridge
Each One Teach One is a frequent visitor in Auroville and its bio-region. Past Sunday they gave performance at Auroville Institute of Applied Technology along with its students, Mohanam Cultural Center children and Lively Project. That was also an opportunity to see what AIAT have done throughout the year, and on what are they focused. We recorded some live music with Mohanam Sound Crew and DJ Phax Mulder, and a story on ecological awareness with artists and dancer from Europe with Mohanam Kinder-garden children. Read more

Sufi and Football
If last week passed in Earth Day-Week spirit, this one will be mostly in Sufi since the visiting guest Sufi musician Latif Bolat prepared many lectures, which are all followed by concerts. Latif is a very serious and advanced Sufi scholar. And on Saturday at 8pm he and Parvathy Baul will give a concert at Sri Aurobindo Auditorium Bharat Nivas, Pavilion of Indian Culture with tittle "Songs from the heart beyond borders." Tamil New Year Show
Almost a hundred kids have been preparing since weeks to be ready for the show on Tamil New Year evening celebration,Thursday 14th of April 2011, at the Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas, Pavilion of Indian Culture. Nine groups of children presented eleven performances to welcome the coming Tamil "Kara" year. Two devotional songs were song by children from Meera women's group and a live music was prepared by Balu for devotional purposes of the Mother to end the evening. From the backstage, few minutes before starting, performers are giving a glimpse of their presentation for this very special show. Read more

Golden Thread of Music
"Let this golden thread of music tie all of us together" was the leading note in the cultural program prepared by children of Deepanam School together with teachers. This program was a just a glimpse of what they've been doing trough school year. And indeed, in the leading tone of music they showed us different things - from classical Indian dance, trough theater play of African fairy tale, sung songs composed by children, compositions played on piano to capoeira in which children are very active on Deepanam School. Odissi and Doppelganger

In today's news we feature short interview with Renu from L'Avenir d'Auroville. She shared with us some exciting news- the presentation on dismountable houses next Friday at Multi Media Center at Town Hall at 5pm will show us few different possibilities on the topic, which might serve to soothe a bit present housing crisis in Auroville. Wind Power
On Saturday April 9th at 8 pm at the Visitors Centre Genius Incorporated Presents will make us laugh once more with Doppelganger - which they wrote is a scientific fiction of future possibilities with the advent of the dual consciousness. At Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas, Pavilion of Indian Culture on Saturday, April 9 at 8 pm Auroville Odissi Dance Group will give the performance Sri Krishna under the Kadamba Tree. Program is dedicated to Anu ben. A devotional dance originating in Odisa, Odissi highlights the beauty of curves and sculpted form in movement.
