Youth concerned by accessibility
Susmita, the producer of the documentary 'Sometimes I can fly' about accessibility, organized a talk with the teenagers of Future School and Alex, the Italian fellow in a wheel chair of the movie. After watching the documentary, the students seemed very interested by the topic and asked many questions, not only about how to make accessibility in Auroville but also about Alex's travels in India. They're very impressed by his courage. They even took pictures with him as a star, exchanged phone number and suggested to organize a dinner with him ! Read more

A documentary about accessibility
Alex is an Italian fellow in a wheel chair. By following his daily routine, people will may understand better the problem of accessibility in Auroville. It's the aim of the documentary 'Sometimes, I can fly', produced by Susmita, an activist who is working on pulling down the architectonic barriers in Auroville.This documentary is part of 'We care film festival' of Delhi. What have might started as an idea about the theater play on physically challenged people, developed in an amazingly honest story on some, mostly negative, traits in young and successful woman trapped in her ego. Caregiving at LEC
Urvasi addressed a group of women caregivers at Auroville's Life Education Center. She gave a lecture followed by a demonstration on the various aspects of caregiving and spoke about the importance of establishing a one-on-one rapport with patients in order to have a deeper understanding of their individual needs and problems. The group also discussed some of the challenges and difficulties caregivers face in their day to day interaction with their patients. Urvasi shed light on caregiver coping skills and responses to life situations. Read more

Accessibility Workshop

A workshop on design for optimal access to public areas for the disabled was held in Auroville on the 3rd and 4th of March. Members of the Delhi-based organization, Samarthyam, conducted the workshop. The training covered access needs of disabled persons, principles of UD (Universal Design), advocacy and representational skills and strategies for implementation of accessibility codes and guidelines to make Auroville completely accessible. Disability Awareness & Sensitization respecting human rights of disabled people and people in general.

Accessible Auroville
The news today features an interview with the Exceutive Director of Samarthyam Anjlee Agarwal and Susmita, talking about the importance of Auroville's accessibility for differently abled people, for everyone in whatever condition in which they may happen to be. Also the passing into the Light of Lucia who left her body last Friday 25th February after a road incident while returning from Rameshwaram with a group of friends. In Conference Room at Town Hall this afternoon at 5pm will be introduction program for the Aligning One's Soul with the Soul of your Nation experiential workshop of International Zone, which will take place throughout the whole weekend at Pavilion of Tibetan Culture. A Piece of Art!
What it started as a workshop for disabled people in merely three years overgrown to a project which tends to connect people from different countries, social and ethical backgrounds to express their creativity on a given unsymmetrical shape. Werner Gabriel, the project holder, and initiator brought this traveling exhibition to Auroville trough connections with Life Education Project and Harini. Girls from Life Education Project made a model of given shape out of cloth, and resembles on Indian woman. All 71 pieces that are on display at Gallery Square Circle at Kala Kendra until 21st of December, are indeed so different each from other, which also shows all the beauty of unity in diversity. Communication Skills
An interview with Andie is the feature for today's news. Andie, always a most welcome volunteer at AurovilleRadio, offers in addition to radio work her skill as a teacher of English at Auroville Language Lab in a six-week intensive course, starting today. Also an announcement of a conference and talk on Alcoholism which took place on Saturday in celebration of the 3rd birthday of the Surrender AA Group (that's Alchoholic Anonymous.) As it's said in recovery, alcohol is cunning, baffling and powerful. Therefore dissemination of knowledge on this subject is continuously called for. Open AA meetings are held every Saturday evening at the Merriam Hill Centre, Center Guest House.

A vision for Universal Design
The first and second day of a three-day workshop focusing on Universal Design, the emerging global trend which aims to create environments with greater access for people with special needs. Topics for discussion include the different challenges faced by those with disabilities in Auroville today, and how existing designs should be adapted to make our surroundings more user-friendly. Also on the agenda are Professional Access Audits, which judge the accessibility of existing structures. Introduction with music, followed by a Q&A session. Building a spiritual city means that all would be able to access it regardless of their bodily condition. Susmita talks with passion about the coming workshop she organized. Experts on accessibility will share their knowledge and will make audit for different parts of Auroville. This is done in order to create awareness and improve planning of the coming city. La formule Arka

Maria Grazia Garilli, est venue, à Auroville, à l'âge de 28 ans ou elle a rencontré son destin. Depuis 2002, l'année d'inauguration de ARKA, elle s'est impliquée dans ce projet, qui comprend plusieurs bâtiments dont un centre de convalescence, une « Guest House » et des appartements pour Aurovilliens. Nothing happens

The weakening through illness, disability, loss or some kind of personal tragedy, carries great potential for spiritual awakening. Not so many people recognize this as an opportunity, and when it happens to them they think there is something dreadfully wrong, something that should not be happening. Ultimately, nothing happens that is not meant to happen. Physically Challenged in Auroville

What will you do if you come across someone in a wheelchair waiting at the bottom of the stairs? Would you offer them your help, would you assume that they are just time passing or will you stop and think? Would you take in account all that you have witnessed? What does physically challenged mean to you. The AurovilleRadio had been welcomed into the life of such person, physically challenged at birth, Susmita had learned to keep herself lifted, working through difficulties she has faced along the way. She feels the time has come for her to share her empathy for the future development of the Auroville Community.

Dopo un viaggio attraverso l'India questo ragazzo che si muove in carrozzella ci parla del suo passato a Bergamo dove faceva l'informatico e del suo futuro che lui spera pieno di studi ''Vorrei studiare sempre''. Forse Lui non sa ancora che Auroville e' il posto di una ''never ending education'' un'educazione che non finisce mai... Tamil News from Auroville

In this week's Tamil news there is an interview with Selvi from Deepam (a project for disabled village kids) where she explains her work and the progress of Deepam which was started as a playground for the disabled and is now possessing its own therapy room and other spaces built with the help of donors. Welcome to the delight of hearing these children singing happily with the Deepam staff and visitors during a 'Deepam' festival of light. Another interview acquaints you with Yves of DehaShakti as preparation, practice and high spirits are under way for the up and coming Aurolympics. For centuries, each year in December at the full moon, the Deepam festival has been celebrated. Its origin refers to a legend of the God Shiva who transformed himself into a divine flame. On that night in Tiruvannamalai on top of the holy mountain Arunachala, a big fire is lit. The Deepam Project for Disabled Village Children, has chose this name because they want to bring light into the lives of the disabled children from the villages. On Tuesday Tuesday 13th December at 6.30pm at Health Centre compound, The Deepam will light several hundred oil lamps. Deepam is inviting everyone for the celebration.
