10 years, Live Music

On Saturday at 8pm, there will be live music with Nuria, Matt, Martin, Mishko, and Rahul offering Catalan-Spanish Songs at Cripa. On the same day, at 9am, Drupad is giving a 24hr non stop Mime Performance in the Sacred Grove Community. It ends on Sunday January 4th at 9am. On Saturday, Sadhana Forest kicks off its 10th Birthday celebrations, at 1pm. They start with workshops for children and end on Sunday morning. As of Saturday 8pm, there will be Kabir music performed by acclaimed musicians, all night. It is a free event, even providing shuttle buses from and to the Solar Kitchen throughout the day and night. Extra ”Fair Extraordinaire”

The "Fair Extraordinaire" at the Youth Centre was indeed extraordinary. The YC team and volunteers made sure that one of the most favored social festivals of the Auroville calendar will remain as such. In addition to regular activities a lot of new nooks and corners, especially catering to to children, had been added. A long list of vendors, a new pizza oven, homebred Auroville bands and Bollywood dancers, made sure that each person could find suitable entertainment. The Cake Competition, and a lot of music were especially appreciated. A mix of sounds recorded at the fair follows. Read more

Swaha`s  Blues Band

The sun was still blazing on the Youth Centre traditional Christmas fair, this year named "Fair Extraordinaire", when Swaha and her excellent Blues Band took over the stage. Their passion for blues was shared with an excited audience. Later on, in a different set with a more acoustic band, Swaha proved that soul, too, is close to her heart. The fair was in full swing with numerous activities for the young, younger and youngest also, who were tempted with some delicious foods and goodies. Read more

Suryan, Margarita, Krishna...

The excellently amazing and charming voice of Suryan merged with the equally mesmerizing voice of young Italian volunteer Margarita, who has managed to become famous in the community over the past few months. They nailed the audience to attentive listening, dwelling into known and less known songs. Krishna with Francoise, with Tamil party, managed to bring laughter, while Francoise, together with a violinist, took us on a different path and to another space. The "Fair Extraordinaire" , the traditional Youth Centre Christmas Fair was slowly coming to an end. Read more

Rock`n`Roll for the End

The "Fair Extraordinaire" was concluded with Amrit's Rock'n'Roll Band. With some delays, the fair came to a successful end with solid rock'n'roll and interesting lyrics. Kadirvel - Fusion Natureband

Last Friday night, a great musical event was held in Cripa, Kalabhumi: Kadirvel and his intrumental Fusion Natureband.  Accompanied by Sriram on Yuva Veena and by Manikandavan on Thavil, Kadirvel delighted us with their performance. The trio was quite incredible and the hand drum showed an extraordinary ability to create a state of euphoria. It induces a trance that helps to release anger. A real feeling of community, unity and well being was tangible. Kadir is the world record holder for playing Ghatam (South Indian pot) continuously for 26 hours. Read more

Dancing in Udavi School

The students from Udavi School beautifully express their talent by a collective program. They recently performed Odissi dance, and Tamil and English drama, as well as Hindi songs. Their confidence was very visible on stage, how they wish to improve and share with the world. By enacting dramas the children explain how to treat and respect parents and elders. Parents, guests and Auroville friends were invited and people from the nearby village of Edayanchavadi came too. Harmonium by Nandida Di, Odissi teacher Kanchana, tabla by Debhashis Das. Colours: Pleasant Like Cooking

Audrey Wallace-Tailor is an Aurovilian painter who has had many exhibitions in America and Auroville. She is an abstract painter using a variety of attractive colors and forms. Audrey settled in Auroville in 2007. She gives workshops in drawing and colors and teaches art. Here, she talks to us about her life and her works, and of the elements of color and form in her paintings. These days, Audrey is painting on the Bharat Nivas entrance wall, where many visitors come and express their surprise. Read more

Shyama`s Interview Part 2

On December 5th, Francois and Rakhal projected the 2nd part of Shyama's (Certitude) interview. This is an extremely moving movie as Shyama recounts the very beginnings of Auroville, her unique relationship with the Mother, the death of the first Auroson and the birth of the second one, as well as her insights into Auroville today. Shyama had seven children and her life, courage and strength are an inspiration to all. The 5th of December is Sri Aurobindo's Mahasamadhi and it is a fitting day as Shyama, the name given by the Mother, is one of Krishna's names. Read more

Shraddhavan filmed interview

Shraddhavan is the Sanskrit name given by the Mother, in June 1972,  to an English woman who joined Auroville in 1970 and has lived here ever since. After studying English Language and Literature at Bristol University in the U.K. she travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and Australia before coming to Auroville. Here, she works as an educator, translator, editor and writer. Several of her poems, stories, essays and book reviews have been published in the Ashram journal Mother India as well as in Heritage magazine. Read more

”Fair Extraordinaire”

The Youth Centre "Fair Extraordinaire" takes place on Saturday the 28th from 2pm onwards, offering all the fun that the community favors for the holiday season. Today at 5pm, the Pavilion of Tibetan Culture (International Zone) invites us to a rare occasion of the opening of an exhibition prepared by the Tibet Museum unit of the Department of International Relations of the Central of Tibetan Administration (Dharamsala). An Exhibition is a Journey in Exile and also depicts recent situations inside Tibet. It will be on for only four days. Tomorrow Cripa presents “CARNATIC Trio”, at 8pm. Read more

Concrete Jungle Skate park

Uriel took a little time off to inform us about the skate park project that he and Florent are busy undertaking. They want to develop the place into a Concrete Jungle: fun, dance, and sports, also not forgetting the parents that will accompany their kids. Skaters can already access existing facilities. About 20 of them attend on a regular basis. So for the Christmas holidays, tell your kids to come skating!

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

This weekend, the Auroville Ultimate Frisbee tournament was held. It was the first Auroville tournament where we could see the home teams playing other teams of India. For people new to the sport it was a good occasion to discover this unique game, where men and women compete alongside, in a fair-play attitude. The rules of the sport were explained and what stands out is the fact that there is no referee. Every Monday and Saturday about 40 players practice  at 4:30 PM at Certitude. Read more

Twiglight Beats: Devotional Songs

Finally, last Saturday night the "Twilight Beats Concert" originally scheduled for November 16th but postponed due to weather conditions was held at Cripa (Kalabhumi). Four artists performed Raga Pushpanjali and Tamil devotional songs on Mother and Sri Aurobindo. The audience was been captivated by the warm voice of Sam Terris (Miresh) and the spiritual and joyful, deep and yet accessible music. Sam also offered two seasonal Christmas songs. At the end of the concert the public rewarded the musicians with a very long applause to show their appreciation. Read more

Wholistic Business Networking

Last Wednesday, on December 11th, Sandhi Spieres organized "Auroville Networking Night". Having founded the "Wholistic Business Network" in 2002, Sandhi Spieres is a counselor, trainer and speaker who has organized many international workshops and meetings. He notes that nowadays people understand the importance of being at a right place and meeting right people. This Networking Night is about helping people to create the personal connections that they are looking for in their lives. This may also help the communication of the residents of Auroville. Volunteering in Auroville

SAVI is a service welcoming volunteers in Auroville. Last Friday, the 13th, they  organized a second Cafe Auroville Gathering at the Unity Pavilion. Discussions focused on seven topics: 1) Welcoming process, 2) Housing, 3) Food, 4) Transport, 5) Services, 6) Networking, and 7) Socializing. This second Gathering offered an opportunity for volunteers to discuss results obtained at the previous meeting. This time Aurovilians and volunteers were asked to choose their topics and to join a group for sharing experiences and knowledge. Read more

The Viziers of Bassora

Last weekend in Bharat Nivas were held three presentations of the The Viziers of Bassora, a play that Sri Aurobindo wrote in 1905, during his stay in Baroda. The manuscript was seized by the police when he was arrested in 1908, and was considered lost until it was discovered in a cupboard and given to the Ashram many years later, after 1950. The source of the plot of The Viziers of Bassora is one of the numerous stories told in The Arabian Nights, entitled “Nur al-Din Ali and the Damsel Anis al-Jalis”. Read more

AV Sustainability Indicators
Auroville Integral Sustainability Institute invited, like last year, 8 post graduate planning students with their Professor from Queen's School of Urban & Regional Planning Canada. They presented their work on AV sustainability indicators yesterday night in MMC. They started some background preparation work in Canada itself and arrived in Auroville 2 Weeks ago for field visit and familiarization with Auroville context.They interacted with many resource persons to get an insight into diverse aspects of community life, issues and challenges. Students on Communication, Frisbee

In today's news we are featuring short interviews made by our volunteer Anahita with students from Linnaeus University  in Sweden. Donna and Johanes talk about their perspectives on work with NGO's in Auroville, for achieving better communication, though their specific assignments remain unknown so far. Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas, Pavilion of Indian Culture will host two cultural programs this weekend, on Friday puppet theater, and on Saturday Odissi dance. A Frisbee Ultimate Tournament takes place on the 21st and 22nd at Sport venue. Read more

How Close Are We?

The Pavilion of French Culture shows, at regular intervals, video interviews with Aurovilians who knew the Mother. Screenings take place at Cinema Paradiso, Town Hall. As Rakhal explains, until today 25 interviews have been recorded, with more to be done. Rakhal and Francois Gautier are working on them, and, as Rakhal says, in general it is very touchy to record these testimonial reflections on the past and future development of Auroville. At the same time, the interviews are vivid documents of the growth that has happened.

CHIRU Presents IGCS

Last Saturday, on December 14th, Doctor Christoph Woiwode was invited by the Centre for International Research on Human Unity (CIRHU) and the German Pavilion, both in Auroville, to give a presentation. The talk was given in the SAIIER Conference room, Town Hall, and was preceded by the gifting of the Trialog Journal (June 2012) on Urban Development and Spirituality to Auroville architects. Dr. Woiwode is a German research scholar from the visiting Faculty at the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Read more

Alba Music

Last Wednesday, on December 11th, Alla Dulh`s exhibition in the Square Circle Gallery, Kala Kendra (Bharat Nivas), closed with a concert. Russian Albert Sultanov played Alba music, which is a trance meditation music based on Indian instruments and mantras. The word Alba means sunrise of the inner sun. Read more

Awakening of Christmass Light

On the Sunday morning of December 15th, a very special performance by and for the children of Auroville was given at Cripa, Kalabhumi: Awakening of Christmas Light. The very wrong spirit and his consort Evilina played a terrible trick on all the kids, freezing the Great North and locking away all the presents that were meant for the children. Listen to Dr Ajay Agarwal, Michael and Bailey talk about the presentation they are giving on December 18th. You are welcome to listen in at Cinema Paradiso at 4-5.30pm. It was the Auroville Integral Sustainability Institute that invited Dr. Ajay and eight Master of Planning students from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to help develop performance measures for sustainable development in Auroville. Last weekend, the community had the chance to explore some views on the culture of the Americas. The atmosphere, at the Unity Pavilion in the International Zone, was relaxed and friendly. It was in particular the Latino countries of Central and South Americas that were covered. Also in the news:  three days of the theater show - Sri Aurobindo's Viziers of Bassora - is being put on stage by Aryamani. Auroville also had a chance to see some good films, taste mate, coffee and tamales, in addition to seeing and participating in dance workshops. Yesterday, Christmas songs were shared, and a salsa rueda performance held, with a workshop. Read more

In today's news we are featuring Michael talking on the second edition of Cafe Auroville, which will

happen tomorrow from 1pm onward, at Unity Pavilion in the International Zone. The second interview is with Balaji on the 7th edition of the Auroville Marathon, which will take place on February 9th, 2014. LATINOAMERIKA will share with us some aspects of culture - from films and food to music, along with Sri Aurobindos dramatic romance play Viziers of Bassora on December 14th, 15th and 16th, at 7pm at Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas.
