Aware of the predicted 50,000 population, he points out that since people do not suddenly change their habits, it's necessary to change current trends, which is where mobility management comes into the picture. Traffic includes vehicles of every type as well as pedestrians. Therefore Karl-Heinz talks about streets in addition to roads, streets and speed breakers and all that offers a sense of safety, security, to those who venture out and about.

Thursday, 31 March 2011 (Environment) Amongst other talks at Mutation II was also Joss presentation of enormous project in Chennai on the banks of Adyar Poonga. Huge work of Joss and many Aurovilians there for last four years was completed just a month ago. It is tremendous transformation of something that used to be a sewer back to river, by sunlit paths next to it. With their work they didn't only expressed lots of creativity but it was also a journey in relation to water which we insulted and degraded that we got sewers instead of rivers. And as Joss mentioned they couldn't have done it if Auroville with what is stands for, wouldn't be behind it... if there wouldn't be an experience of transformation in reality.

Geshe Pema Dorjee finally came to Auroville, and blessed us with his talk on the Buddhist view on the environment. His lecture was interesting, witty, and right to the point on the source of ecological problems that we're facing right now. It's desire and greed; he sees this as the main factor and source of ecological problems which started so long ago, and have now overgrown to the proportion that extinction faces the human race, including all living species. Perhaps the solution is simply to become content with what we have, vs. greediness....

Monday, 10 January 2011 (News) Today's news features an excerpt from Geshe Pema Dorjee's talk which he gave last Saturday at the Tibetan Pavilion. His observations are from the point of view of Buddhism, yet are they not in agreement with and an echo of what our higher nature whispers to us, amid the ongoing ramblings of our ego: more more, more? He pointed out that desire and greed are the basis of over-consumption, which is the root cause of our ecological crisis. Also in the news are postings of the art exhibits running concurrently.

Monday, 10 January 2011 (Environment) One of the speakers at the Green Practices Workshop, Lucas Dengel’s presentation was on Solid Waste Management. The presentation was structured into various sections dealing with the present scenario, how we discard waste, public health and hygiene, moral issues related to waste management, technical issues, and more. He spoke passionately about the dangerous consequences we face due to our disregard to indiscriminate dumping of waste. Lucas explained the pros and cons of many latest waste management technologies. His final message was to practice recycling as, “we are all recycled”. Download presentation Saturday, 11 December 2010 (City Life) In the series of seminars about sustainability presented by Living Routes and Auroville Green Center on 11th of November Ing-Marie and B were talking about waste. Lots have been done in last few years and awareness of ecology is rising, so in Auroville 65% of waste is pick up by Eco Service. But Eco Service itself is still facing many challenges – from inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, lack of strategy to work as a unit, and receive some funds from the city. Right now the most important, and urgent need is land because there's no adequate landfill for the waste that it cannot be recycle or burn, and need to be land filled. Monday, 22 November 2010 (Environment) The interesting presentation by the PondyCAN team given at Quiet on Tuesday second of Noveber 2010 with the analysis of the root causes of the problem on this Puducherry -Tamil Nadu coastline didn't bring any solutions, but surely gave a hope that this problem might be solved. It appears, though, that the implementation step by step of the required measures isn't likely to happen as soon as it could unless it is specifically asked for not only by PondyCAN but also by Auroville in a more massive way than has been done until now.Read more Thursday, 18 November 2010 (Environment) Toby a hydrologist and Aurovilian speaks about the state of water management in and around the bio-region of Auroville. His presentation includes a warning about Auroville's potential future of overtaxed aquifers, poorly constructed failing infrastructure, and lowering water tables. Toby also speaks about solutions such as making community water use public information to encourage conservation, investing in alternative water infrastructure including rainwater catchment and desalination plants, and implementing a water distribution system where people would pay the real cost of clean water now to raise the necessary funds to maintain Auroville's water autonomy in the future.

Formerly un-recylable waste was dumped into a landfill, now no longer an option as that land is no longer part of Auroville. B addresses the current question surrounding throwing something away: just exactly where is 'away?' Part of the answer, as always, concerns the raising of our consciousness around what we think we need thereby generating waste.
