Behavior Study on Waste
On Monday Min and Akshay of "earth & us" presented their findings from a study of how garbage is handled in Auroville. This study was on waste in particular but was conceptualized as an example for behavioral change more generally. Many Aurovilians see the need for more ecological practices being normalized in the day to day life of the community. How do we encourage those practices to take hold? Listen to the first part of the presentation and see the slideshow for ideas and findings that make for the beginnings of an answer. Read more

About renewable energies and recycling
Gilles G, one of the founders of Solar Kitchen, talks about using the sun to produce steam to power a canteen to cater for up to 1,000 people. The system is still a hybrid, with diesel used to supplement sunshine, but previous diesel consumption has been cut by more than 30 percent. Robi from Aureka also talks about the production of wind pumps and their use in the green belt where the ban on electricity and diesel forces people to go for alternatives. And Gillian, coordinator of the waste collection service Ecoservice, speaks of attempts to avoid landfill, and to establish recycling – getting inspired help from local people who, for example, pointed out that things such as toothbrushes can be recycled. The LFA Sound Space

During the LFA (litter-free Auroville) campaign, AurovilleRadio was invited to participate in the exhibition room called stArt of Certitude's dome. We took this opportunity to produce a sound in order toawaken people's awareness of noise pollution. The manner in which people began to listen was quite imaginative. With the participation of Newcomer Marc, organiser of the exhibition and a designer, we imagined a box where everybody could enter, listen to the sound and be totally cut off from outside, in  order to be fully focused on sounds. The result: a strange sort of soundproof cardboard box called “Sound Space”, a mysterious and darkened sound experience with a long waiting line attended mostly by kids..Read more

Impressions from the TrashionShow

One of the highlights from last Friday´s Litter Free Auroville was the amazing Trashionshow. The numerous talented designers attended a workshop one week before, where they got input, material and ideas how to create fashion out of trash. The result was simply outstanding: They transformed vinyl records, juice boxes, cassette tapes, bubblewrap, rice sacks, used fashion magazines and plastic bags into creations just designed for the catwalk. The audience felt like being in Paris, Milan or New York. Here are some impressions from the Trashionshow, featuring excerpts from the show itself, pictures and reactions from the audience. We can Make a Change

The 29^th of January was indeed a different Friday for Auroville. It started early in the morning with meditation, and after school the children and many adult Aurovilians collected litter along the roads... which all lead to Certitude where  the main action took place throughout the day. In a conversation with Chandra, Ribhu and Mira who were three of the many active facilitators for this day's events, some interesting facts were uncovered: the target is to create a team for a platform to create a change. It is ongoing, ideas and work, to reduce waste. Each of us can participate: the way we choose to acquire our food, and how we handle our waste, becoming aware that we can't just 'throw it away' as there is no 'away.' .
