More problems, more progress

An eminent educator, linguist, sociologist, psychologist and philosopher, Professor Chittaranjan Das spoke of his past experiences in education. He reflected on his first visit to Auroville, meeting the Mother, and other inspirational persons. To Professor Das, integral education is about attitude, it is a twofold relationship. Initially it is about special involvement in something that is yet to be presented, and secondly how one relates to children. With many problems comes progress, and in integral education  progress is the peak,  the goal to be reached, but it's never reached. He noted that there's always a progress where there are problems...

Why Study Foreign Languages?

Multi-national, multi-lingual nature of Auroville gives its citizen and guests an extraordinary opportunity to study foreign languages and therefore helps to establish mutual understandings between cultures and to build a human unity. Language is the keeper of all learning. One learns the cultural values that unite societies in common understanding through language. A united international society depends upon the pursuit of knowledge that creates dialog and reveals shared values. Those who speak foreign languages are agents to maintain the bonds between the cultures of the languages he or she speaks. In this interview some of Aurovillian agents share how they learn foreign languages and explore the traditions of human existence.

Working at the city center Cafe

My name is Muthukumar. I was born in Kuilapalayam in a poor family and studied in a government school there until the 4th standard. In 1994 I got the chance to join the Life Education Center in Kottakarai, where I studied for the next 7 years, learning masonry and typing. Also I learned about Auroville and the works of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Then, after studying in Pondicherry for 2 years, I got married. My next work was at Siddhartha Farm, and in the Auroville Boutique. But I would like to work in the area of social work. Now I'm working at the cafe “le Morgan” in the city center where I am happy; I have a beautiful life in Auroville. mp3/2009_04_22_interview_muthukumar_city_center_tamil_lite.mp3&totalTime=9:55

Read more

Between Kalabhumi & Future School

The first school  built in Auroville the Mother named 'Last School' as it was to be the last school of its kind, of the old way of teaching children.  Located near Aspiration Community, Last School is a middle school/high school which has existed in Auroville since the year 1985. Last School students need to be self motivated, and can - if they wish - be involved in the decision-making process and changes affecting the school, since their opinion and feedback is very much respected. Recently Last School's team decided to relocate its campus to the center of Auroville.

The Dream for tomorrow

Last Sunday, the French Pavilion presented a documentary on Auroville produced in 1972 by Jean-Pierre Elkabbach. This 118 minute documentary, broadcast on French channel "ORTF" in 1973 shows what Auroville was like then: a few houses in a red desert, some school facilities like Last School, the Pyramids and the Yogurt Pots, and of course Matrimandir under construction. After the projection, some Aurovilians felt inspired to discus about this period and their impression after 35 years. You can listen the intervention of Claire, Monique, Shraddhavan and Mallika by clicking on the logo PLAY or download here.

Summer carving workshop

This week there is no Tamil program but there is a sweet and interesting interview: from the Auroville kids who took part in a summer carving workshop. To name a few, there were Aris, Perceval, Eden, Bharathy, Mia plus many more. All the children ranged between 5 and 10 years old. Incidentally, during a heat wave the body has to work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Excessive heat can result in serious health threats by pushing the human body beyond its limits, so sit back and listen to the program. To listen to the interview click on the logo play.
