Yes, there are happy ways near to God’s sun; But few are they who tread the sunlit path; Only the pure in soul can walk in light. Sri Aurobindo, Savitri B. VI, C. II, P. 448 **************************************************************************************** Dear friends,’ 7 May 2014′ Due to the general elections, I was obliged to postpone the Governing Board and the International Advisory Committee meetings scheduled in June. They will now be held on 1-3 August 2014. Meanwhile, I would like to share with you three areas in which I feel urgent action is necessary.’ Firstly, I am very disappointed at the apparent inability of Aurovilleans to choose at regular intervals the seven members Working Committee as laid down in the Act. The whole so-called "Auroville Process"’ of selecting members for the Working Committee seems to be permanently bogged down in confusion/ controversy as a result of which I find that invariably the existing Working Committee is obliged to carry on even after its tenure is over, while desperate efforts are made to choose new members. May I suggest that the simplest way to do this would be through a proper election: either physically or by E-mail, instead of the present convoluted procedure. I urge the community to give this matter their urgent consideration because the lack of a legally constituted and empowered Working Committee tends to weaken the functioning of Auroville, as well as the Governing Board.’ The second matter which, as you know, has been weighing on my mind is the whole question of land acquisition by purchase or exchange. I do not see any major break-through yet in this area, and every month that is lost means that the price of land is rising and the dangers of commercial interests intruding into Auroville steadily growing. I am unable to understand why the community is not taking this matter up with the seriousness that it deserves. In the final analysis, if we do not get the land we will not be able to build the city.’ Thirdly, I am not quite sure whether the Town Development Committee is fully functional.’ We have the great advantage of guidance from Dr. B.K. Doshi, but despite that I am left with the impression that we are not making adequate progress in planning and building the city. I am open to correction here, but would like to be assured that the TDC is indeed fully functional. In this context have we taken full advantage of the Advisory Committee set up with distinguished members?’ On the brighter side, I was glad to learn that my long-standing suggestion that all those connected with education in Auroville should get together and work out an integrated educational structure, including higher education is being pursued. I believe a group is working on this, and I look forward to get a report at the next Governing Board meeting. I am also happy that, at long last, the Bharat Nivas Trust has been duly registered, which should help in the enhanced performance of this important institution.’ Warm regards and best wishes to you all.’ Karan Singh
