The Auroville Charter

Auroville was born on 28 February 1968. Its founder, the Mother, created the Auroville Charter consisting of four main ideas which underpinning her vision for Auroville. When Auroville came into being, All India Radio (AIR) broadcast the Charter, live, in 16 languages. Aurovilians apply the ideas of the Auroville Charter in their daily life, in policy-development, and decisions, big and small. The Charter thus forms an omnipresent referent that silently guides the people who choose to live and work for Auroville.

The Auroville Charter

Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But, to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the divine consciousness.
Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future
realisations.
Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.

During the Auroville inauguration in 1968, youth from 124 different nations and 23 Indian states, deposited a handful of their native soil into the Urn, a marble clad structure in the form of a symbolic lotus bud, located in the centre of the Amphitheatre (see photo). The Auroville Charter – handwritten in French by the Mother – rests along with this soil, sealed in the Urn, as a powerful message and promise.

A discussion on Integral Yoga

On International Yoga Day, Savitri Bhavan hosted a discussion on the importance and newness of Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga. In this fascinating segment, both Aurovillians and guests question and analyze Integral Yoga. Tune in for some enlightening insights.

Festival for the Guardian Deity

In the Auroville bioregion are many temples associated with the local deities which the villagers propitiate for sound living and greater harmony. One such deity is the Ayyanaar, who is the Guardian of the space, known for keeping negative influences at bay. One can identify this deity by the large red warrior sitting with his two consorts, prominently displayed on the roadside.
The custom of the villagers is to conduct festivals at regular intervals to keep the energy of the deity vibrant and alive. One such festival is the celebration of the ‘Marriage day’ of Ayyanaar with his consorts. This festival has been celebrated recently on April 24th. It is surprising to see that this day coincides with that of the Mother’s Final Arrival day in Pondicherry, April the 24th. Coincidence or synchronicity!?! Just a play of the Divine, maybe!
So on this occasion, the village held an all-night play depicting the story of Ayyanaar in the local folk tradition. Here is the audio of some interesting parts from the 5 hour play.

Savitri, B. II, C. XIII

Savitri, Book II, The Book Of The Traveller Of The Worlds, Canto XIII, In The Self Of Mind, Pages 283 – 288

King Aswapathy reaches the silent Self of Mind at the summit of the mental worlds and feels that he has arrived at his goal. But a ray of light falls upon all things seen or touched or heard or felt, and showed his mind that nothing could be known. He must reach “That”, the true source of all knowledge. Sri Aurobindo poetically describes and destroys all the value of the planes of Mind which the traveler has been through so far, and the immortal spirit of the king is imprisoned in a world where all must die to live and live to die.

Mother's Q & A – 11/7/56

Mother’s Questions And Answers, July 11, 1956

Mother gives us an excellent summary and introduction to the subject of the beings who live in the occult worlds, the worlds which are invisible to ordinary eyes. Then she points out that the advent of this new and stronger consciousness brings more clarity. One result is that we can see things in our own nature which we may not like, but which were always there. She also points out that when the Force which is at work is stronger and more insistent, naturally what resists, resists more strongly. Then she explains how to be in the consciousness that can see the working of the new force.

Savitri, B. II, C. XII

Savitri, Book II, The Book Of The Traveller Of The Worlds, Canto XII, The Heavens Of The Ideal

The Traveller enters the first world of spiritual higher mind. Although the great godheads and great thoughts at this level are a powerful part of the whole cosmic scheme, they are not the final goal. Sri Aurobindo writes that although the power of the spiritual higher mind isn’t enough to completely purify us, still it can make a first change in us. On either side of the ascending stairs of the World Stair at this level rise the two kingdoms of this plane of consciousness; the mighty kingdoms of the Deathless Rose and the mighty kingdoms of the Deathless Flame Each one gives the seeker something which helps along the way.

Mother's Q & A – 4/7/56

Mother’s Questions And Answers, July 7, 1956

Mother explains how to get rid of a localized pain in the body. She gives a detailed explanation and a three-step method which will remove pain in five minutes. There are also quotations from Mother’s Agenda, showing how Mother worked on her own body and did the same things she taught the students, along with some quotations from Sri Aurobindo’s Record Of Yoga, where he wrote about doing similar work on his own body, fifty years before Mother’s Agenda conversations on the same subject.

Auroville Economy Fundamentals

A new study group has been inspired, to brainstorm and create a resolute economy structure for Auroville of the future. Spearheading this endeavor is Jaya and Divyanshi, in collaboration with other team members. We have a tendency of approaching economy in a very logic frame of mind, based on financial rules and principles and tend to have rigid parameters, here we have a refreshing new approach to economy with spirituality at its base, guided by the principles of only The Mother, and fundamentals derived from interpretation of the Matri-Mandir gardens. Yes! the Matrimandir gardens is like a matrix in its own, gifted to us by the Mother and can bring enormous insights into designing of lifestyles and ecosystems, as Jaya elaborates in this interview. They propose, for an out-of-the-box solution is required to shape an economy, which should have no parallel in the world, as it should very well be like an invention, such is the theme set for Auroville. It is an interesting and thought provoking point-of-view where you have flowers, gardens, spirit and feelings as a vocabulary to design an economy which serves the people rather than an economy designed to enslave the talent and power humans can produce. This group has started off with small steps but with great intensity into research and problem solving methods, starting right from the micro level and building up the economy story.
Anyone listening to this interview and is related to Auroville economy must consider offering time and energy to this special group, determined to achieve The Mother’s Dream, “Money is no longer the sovereign lord of people”

Savitri, B. II, C. XI, Part 3

Savitri, Book II, The Book Of The Traveller Of The Worlds, Canto XI, The Kingdoms And Godheads Of The Greater Life, Part 3

The Traveller is reaching the summit of the triple stairs of the Greater Mind. He sees the sovereign Kings of Thought whose thoughts are partners in the vast control of the commanding thoughts of the creator Self. With their abstract purity of godless sight they brought to mind what mind could never reach. This was the play of the bright gods of Thought, attracting into time the timeless Light. They have planned to snare the feet of Truth and keep her captive for the thinker’s joy. Sri Aurobindo shows us how each of us relates to Truth and how we each use Truth for our own purposes, but Truth is greater than her forms. She remains herself and infinite.
