Veena Naadha Pravaham
Last Saturday night, Smt. Jayalakshmi Sugumar gave us a unique performance in the Sri Aurobindo auditorium (Bharat Nivas). She is the grand daughter of veena legend, late Sri. Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer, founder of the magnificent Karaikudi Bani, and daughter of veena vidushi, late Smt. Sankari Ammal. Having taught in Kalakshetra since 1966, in 1976 Jayalakshmi Sugumar shifted to Pondicherry, where she continued her services until 1981. Following that she worked for the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society.
In 1998 Smt. Jayalakshmi Sugumar started her own veena school, called Vaineeka Music, along the lines of her illustrious grand father . She is not at all for awards or rewards. Her affectionate, selfless and soulful approach is evident in the high quality of music from her students. This was clear to all from the great performance that we were treated to.
