Audible Weed Walk – Ep.78 “New Year again and again!”

New Year again and again! — Happy new year everybody! Yesterday was Puthandu, Tamil New Year and today – is Poila Boishakh – Bengali new year. Every year over the few days between 13th and 15th of April we have the new year for Odisha, Assam, Bengal, Punjab, Tamil Nadu etc. who follows a solar calendar and a few weeks before that – there is Ugadi, Gudi Padwa which are new years in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra etc. following a lunar calendar. Such diversity; amazing – isn’t it? Irrespective of when the new year is celebrated, following which calendar it is linked with harvest and abundance. I find it fascinating. In this podcast I try to dig in the food tradition in Bengal. For new year food tradition in Tamil Nadu – you can catch podcast #37. In Bengal, the food tradition for new year is less obvious compared to Puthandu or Ugadi where raw mango, neem flowers, and jaggery are used. Still, from Bengal I found three recommendations, and one of them is about eating weedy greens. After a few untimely showers weeds are re-spouting, and renewing themselves offering the goodness they bring along. We embody their resilience, their life force – when we carefully pick, and incorporate in our diet. I wish all of you a continued or renewed connection with nature in this new year!
