Suryamayi’s PhD on Auroville – chapt.9 “Conclusion”

A social scientist born and raised in Auroville, Suryamayi was curious to explore whether and how we were engaging with our ideals, and what sustained this process. In her PhD thesis, “Towards a Spiritualised Society: Auroville, an Experiment in Prefigurative Utopianism” she explores how the founding spiritual ideals of Auroville are, and have been, embodied and articulated in its organisation, development, culture and practices. Listen in for theoretical, conceptual and practical insights into how this uniquely “spiritually prefigurative” utopian practice is enabled, challenged, and sustained – relevant within and beyond the Auroville experiment.

While listening to the reading of the concluding chapter of her PhD thesis by author herself, frankly, I was almost transported to a 7-part BBC series film I had seen at the Alliance Française in Ahmedabad sometime in 1986, “The Voyage of Charles Darwin”.

The film often weaves the words of the author from his book “The Origin of Species” alongside showing on screen the story of the beginning, the middle and the end of his journey and his ground breaking research.
A spirit of sincere inquiry is so palpable in listening to this thesis that one feels lifted about the ordinary activity of mind. There are insights, observations, illuminations. This is author’s invaluable gift to Auroville. It will help birth the spirit of Auroville to those who care for it, who yearn for it.
Thank you, Suryamayi. Thank you, Auroville Radio.

But without this recorded readings, I may not have paid sufficient time and attention to this work. It was both helpful and motivating.
