Synthesis of Yoga

Sri Aurobindo’s Synthesis of Yoga is his principal work on yoga; an examination of the traditional yogas and religions and, a detailed, thorough explanation of his own particular method of Integral Yoga. In this reading please find on page 581 the second half of Chaper 5, The Divine Personality, of Part 3 The Yoga of Divine Love.

Notions of the divine Personality, if left to the discrimination of the intellect, and according to our imagination, will leave us with something which is not at all That. We may say that That is the opposite of our humanity; to enter into relations with it, our tendency is to compose human fictions, symbols, to make it nearer to us. However it is by spiritual experience that we find these things are not fiction, symbols, but truths of divine being. The Divine is a Person, a conscious Being who expresses his nature to us, in us.

There is beyond the intellect a light where all is one truth. Of all these truths, each present, all are justified in all the rest. There we realize that He is Vlshnu, Krishna, Kali, the Christ, the Buddhha. Out of the unknowable the conscious Being, the divine Person, manifested here, still speaks: “This too is I; even here beyond the view of the mind, I am He.”
