Synthesis of Yoga

The Synthesis of Yoga is Sri Aurobindo’s principal work on yoga; an examination of the systems of traditional yogas as well as a thorough explanation of his own method of Integral Yoga. This reading consists of the first half of Chapter 4 The Perfection of the Mental Being, found in Part 4 The Yoga of Self-Perfection, page 632.

A Yoga of self-perfection must be a reversal of the present relations of the soul of man to his mental, vital and physical nature. At present man is a partly self-conscious soul limited by his mind, life and body. He has to become a self-conscious soul master of his mind, life and body which would allow him to be superior to and a free possessor of his instruments.
He must find his highest self, thereby ceasing to be his mental, vital and physical ego (which is not his real self but merely an instrument of Nature … and thus he acts as if he were a separate existence in the material universe.

This effort of man to be master of his own being has been the sense of a large part of his past spiritual, intellectual and moral strivings.

The second half of this chapter, mid-page 637, comes in the next reading.
