Felabration 2017

Fela Anikulapo Kuti would be 79 years old 15th of October, if had he not died from complications of AIDS in 1997. As the inventor of the enduring and influential Afrobeat music style, the composer of an enormous body of music, and one of the bravest political voices in 20th century African music. A powerful new generation of Nigerian musicians has emerged in that time, and the music they now champion has been dubbed “Afrobeats,” an appropriation of the name Fela gave his original sound during its heyday. The youngest artists on the scene today have no direct memory of Fela, though his legacy is impossible to escape. In this program, we hear from current day Nigerians from multiple generations and genres—fuji, juju, hip-hop (Afrobeats) and highlife—on how they remember this musical giant, and how they reckon with his complex and challenging legacy.

New Look of the Studio by Shipra

Gentle, yet energetic Shipra Raman has joined us as a volunteer, not as a content producer or journalist but as an architect. Hailing from Lucknow, and currently residing in New Delhi, in close proximity of Sri Aurobindo ashram, Shipra was looking for opportunity to come to Auroville, and experience it on her own skin, and contribute with her skills.
For us – AurovilleRadio she designed a new, fresh, and more people (and sound), friendly environment of our recording studio in Town Hall.

Deepawali 17th Oct 2017

The yearly Deepawali celebrations were a huge success. The numerous crowd filled the Solar Kitchen ground this year due to the fact that Bharat Nivas is under the construction (where our annual celebration occurs).
AV children and adults brought us different styles of performances going from traditional folk, classical dance to contemporary dance and hip hop singing.
The evening concluded with inviting all the artists on stage.
Thanks to the team of Sangamam and all the Aurovillians who took part in this wonderful celebration.
Till next year…..

Auroville Papers

Much more than paper, Auroville Papers is a unit that works as a team where there is no hierarchy, but only friendship and sharing of creativity and responsibility. They work in true Auroville spirit.
This is one of the units that started in the early times when conditions were difficult, but nevertheless in time they have expanded and improved their work.
With the recent change of economy, Auroville Papers had to adapt, and this pushed the team to be more innovative. Now not only do they produce aesthetic stationery, but they have also extended their repertoire to include all sorts of handicrafts, such as: earrings, door screens, a large variety of decorative items, and also some art work. One item that particularly caught my eye was a beautiful sculpture of a white unicorn (see our video on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqW332od3KA). I felt like I had just walked into an art gallery rather than a paper factory.
Because of the economic change Luisa remarked that we cannot be passive. We always need to be challenged in life if we want to keep ourselves well and active, and stay awaken. It is a work of challenges and creativity says Jean Jaques.
These words reminded me that “all life is Yoga”.

At the interview we have Jean Jaques, Herve’,and Luisa

GM on Code of Conduct

On the 23rd of October a general meeting was held to discuss the topic of “code of conduct for all trusts and units of the Auroville Foundation”. There was a good presentation along with many questions and doubts being raised.

Exploring Prosperity Gathering

Since a few months a movement has started in Auroville, a movement of reasoning and result.
A few community members have come together and are backing an initiative by the name of ‘Exploring Prosperity’. The group made an introduction in one of the ‘CAT’ meeting. They shared an open letter which spoke of their agenda of work. They invited other community members to join this initiative. There was a signature campaign. On 17th Oct they organized a 1st gathering of all the people wishing to join this collective work. More than 40 people attended the meeting and selected an area of work to participate. The process was inclusive and involving, here the participants in groups shared what is their definition for Auroville Prosperity and then worked on pointing out what are the real obstacles in achieving this kind of prosperity.
the meeting ended with, group members self organizing their next steps and the path they wish to take as a collective to explore solution to all the obstacles realized during this exercise.
The Team is committed to re-allign Auroville to its original ideal and vision, and not focus too much on finding faults but investing energy in finding solutions which can bring prosperity to Auroville.

Aurora's Eye

For Serena to be in Auroville it is a privilege. She “stumble” upon it on her journey all over the planet looking for intentional communities, searching for alternative, more truer lifestyle. And every community she has stopped, she would made a video which was donated to the members of it.
And how she ended here, in Auroville? As Serena laugh it off – the decision was made for her, she just went with the flow…. and The Mother Dream was also hers.
And now she make herself rather busy capturing “Glimpses of Auroville”, where she is documenting, creating a bridge, creating highlights as we are quite fast approaching 50th anniversary. (and by the way, the OutreachMedia is in need of video makers, photographers, writers for the occasion).

Amongst so many other things, Serena recently initiate RAK – Random Act of Kindness, whereby group of people visit services and units and spread hugs, joy, smiles…..

Tabla recital by Sanjay Mukherjee

Saturday evening we witnessed a powerful tabla recital, supported by the sitar, by Pt. Sanjay Mukherjee showcasing various styles of tabla playing.
He is one of the most well versed musicologist and great teacher on the subject belonging to the Farukhabad Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music.
He went through different complex tabla rhythms which only connoisseurs can name. Even poetry could be recited by playing the tabla… as he commented, the fingers need to sprout vigour and emotions with supreme artistry.
Tabla and sitar blended together very well. They concluded with a jugalbandi on tabla and sitar much to the taste of the public.
The evening was organised by ARPANAA.
Thank you so much Geeta, Creativity & Mona, Yantra for this wonderful evening.
