The Synthesis of Yoga

The Synthesis of Yoga is Sri Aurobindo’s principal work on yoga; in it he examines all traditional systems of yoga as well as various religions. And he gives a thorough explanation of his own system of Integral Yoga.

This reading is the first half of Chapter III The Godward Emotions, found in Part Three The Yoga of Divine Love, on page 561.

“The principle of Yoga is to turn Godward all or any of the powers of human consciousness … that there may be union.” The Yoga admits all the feelings with which religion approaches God, save that of fear; the Yogin aspires to embrace the Divine with the fearless confidence of the child in his mother, with that intimate sense of oneness which perfect love brings. The Divine is the object of the human soul.

” … realising God as the higher self, the guiding Will, Master, whom we love and serve, not fear of him but love of him … is the way.”
