The Auroville Theatre Group
presents
Ti Na Ni Na Ni
a theatre group from the Netherlands
in the premiere of Stairway to Heaven
Saturday, August 8th, 2009
7:30 pm
at the Visitors Centre

A joyful and physical theater performance based on the works and philosophy of 3 artists: 2 painters, Piet Mondrian and Marcel Duchamps and 1 musician /composer: Cornelius Cardew.
All 3 artists started the same way: how to free oneself from the ideas and dogmas of every day life and how to make it possible to have more freedom of mind and tolerance for each other.
They went their own way in complete freedom of thought, speech and work, but they were not careless. All three took great interest in their environment and human society.
Composer Cornelius Cardew went the farthest. He felt that every piece of art should be made to make a man happier.
Marcel Duchamps was the one who revitilized art with a lot of humour and used articles from daily life and called them READY MADES.
Piet Mondrian combined serious thoughts with a great love for music and dance, like Boogie Woogie and foxtrot.
About our group Ti Na Ni Na Ni:
Ti Na Ni Na Ni is the production group from the Theater School for Youth in Alkmaar and Arnhem, Netherlands. For the last 10 years we combine physical theater and classical drama together to create our own reality; professional actors work together with theater and dance students.
If we play in a foreign country we always put young actors in our performance. We also invite groups from other countries to come and play in Netherland at schools and theaters. Just to get in contact with each other’s culture and theater ideas.
In the performance Stairway to Heaven we chose the 3 artists –
Mondrian, Duchamps and Cardew – for their richness of images, rhythms and mathematics as well as their use of colors. The story starts as a daily life’s day: As soon as the players get out of
their sleep, they open their window and see a beautiful morning. They say hello to the light, the flowers, the table, the kettle, which boils the water for the tea: Good morning, you copper kettle!
Then daily rush starts; run through streets and stairs of metro and train stations. They fall, disappear, run into each other, jump and run again. No daily life is not boring in this performance: In this way it is not dramatic! It is joy; even if modern time is rushing and surface like. It is also meeting each other, and dreaming a way with one you like, but …. Rush rush, no time to dream, but don’t worry you will meet another one with whom you can boogie woogie and do the foxtrot. . Drama will come when the day is over and we all have to sleep.
We use the upsweeping music of Cornelius Cardew, al ot of modern acrobatics and surrealist acts to give the audience, young and old, a swell time.
