Unspins Bharatanatyam

She who Unspins, performed by Ashwini Kaarthikeyan, was presented at Sri Aurobindo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas. The performance was accompanied with live music by P.T. Narendran (Nattuvangam), G. Srikanth (Vocal), B.P. Haribabu (Mridangam), Easwar Ramakrishnan (Violin), Devaraj (Flute). This performance was a repertoire of purely Bharatanatyam classical recital dance in Tamil, Sanskrit & Telugu with simultaneous projected translations in English.

We had the chance also to see projected images of Ashwini’s oil paintings, which mirror the dance items and enhance the sensual experience of all present. Ashwini Kaarthikeyan began her journey as a dancer at the age of nine with Shri Roopchandji Pardesi. She then learnt under Smt. Prerna Desai of the Kalakshetra bani who helped lay in her a strong foundation for this classical dance discipline. More teachers followed after which Ashwini lived and worked in America for eight years. She has a Masters degree in the Science of Waldorf Education from Sunbridge College, NY, USA. In February 2009, Ashwini moved to Chennai, where she resumed her training with Shri P.T. Narendran, a most gifted teacher, dancer and choreographer.
