The plant is called kachu in Sanskrit and in Bengal and in Assam it is called Kachu or Kasu. It seems it had originated in the Bay of Bengal region of SE Asia and traveled via ocean trades to Polynesian islands where it is very popular and was introduced to Japan some 2500yrs ago.
