AV WOMEN SOUND ARTISTS PROJECT

This is a sound recording made by a group of women in Auroville. It has been sent in as an entrant for Soundphiles, a new section introduced in the IAWRT Asian Womens Film Festival, to be held in New Delhi in March 2014. The theme for Soundphiles is Many Echoes, Many Worlds. If this sound recording is selected, the news will be relayed in December 2013

ONE LINE SYNOPSIS: Unity in Diversity with Unicity MAIN SYNOPSIS: NOTE: This sound recording offers a handmade radio listening experience. It is like many radio channels jammed together producing a seemingly chaotic broadcast, but in the dissonance the one resonating message filters through, Unity in Diversity with Unicity. This broadcast starts with voices heard simultaneously of women from different cultures. Their voices are harshly shushed and suppressed as has happened in various cultures throughout all ages. But their voices break through and hear mothers and sisters gently uplifting We hear repeated attempts affirming various qualities of woman as a prelude to Singing; women in their sufferings have always found solace in singing; though the songs sung simultaneously sound cacophonous there is an underlying Harmony Auroville belongs to nobody in particular, Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. This first sentence of the Auroville Charter is broadcast in many languages. The women break out into song, celebrating, before playfully breaking out into an affirmation of Unity in Diversitygentle but strong, happy and even at times hystericstill, it is the ONE affirming UNICITY! NOTE: This recording was made with a H2 zoom as a microphone placed in the center and all nine sound artists vocalizing simultaneously, moving around each other exploring distances from the microphone. It is a one spontaneous take, recorded after 2 quick brainstorming sessions, on the idea and form of hand made radio. No one really knew what the other was going to vocalize. We aspiring sound artists, having found this handmade radio form, are quite confident that we could develop this further and delve deeper into creative ideas, should we have the time Alas, we came to know of Soundphiles rather late, but still on time to make an entry..! More than anything though, this was a joyful experience shared together. Hope you enjoy the recording 🙂 LANGUAGES IN THE RECORDING: English, Hindi, Japanese, Tamil, Tibetan, Korean, Changki dialect (Nagaland), and also a few mysterious languages channeled!
