Presentation of new record “Chimu Fiesta” by Suite; the expatriate

On October 15th 2021 at the Kalabhumi studio in Auroville the new product of the “Suite; the expatriate” project led by the talented Dhani Muniz was presented.

Dhani entertained the audience by telling the story of this recording, interspersed with a small musical performance with drummer Suresh. In this recording you can hear one of the songs performed by the duo.

A video of this presentation is available on AvRadio youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGAZvG4wIe8&ab_channel=AurovilleRadio

The album is called “Chimu Fiesta” and new artists Dhani Muniz has surrounded himself with a Dream Team of composer/musicians for his debut record. Indian pianist-composer Aman Mahajan, percussionist Suresh Bascara and Dutch-born Maarten Visser on tenor and soprano saxophone, and India born Jules Arindam on bass, have all performed widely on the Indian music circuit, and in Europe and the USA.

“Chimu Fiesta” is an album bred out of dissatisfaction and a healthy dose of anger. Some prefer to come up with a name or a concept before starting such a project, in order to give it shape; in this case, the shapes were lying around for a while, waiting for Dhani’s fellow musicians to take and transform them. It was this sudden outpouring after such a long period of gestation (the oldest piece dates back to when Dhani was 17) that prompted its title. The Chimu were a pre-Incan civilization now famed for, among other things, the intrinsic violence of their culture. And while no one was beheaded in the making of this record, it does signify a return to a certain type of creative violence, and one that is most often palpable in the early stages of things- abstract art, modern classical music, rock n’ roll, Delta blues, jazz, and basically all human civilization.
