Synthesis of Yoga

The Synthesis of Yoga is Sri Aurobinido’s principal work on yoga; in it he examines the traditional systems of yoga and explains his own method of Integral Yoga.

This reading is of the first half of Chapter 1 the Yoga of Self-Perfection found in Part 4, The Principle of Integral Yoga, page 609.

Each Yoga in its process has the character of the instrument it uses; the Hathayogic process is psycho-physical, Rajayogic mental and psychic, the way of knowledge is spiritual and cognitive, the way of devotion spiritual, emotional and aesthetic, the way of works spiritual and dynamic by action. Each is guided in the ways of its own characteristic power. But all power is in the end one, all power is really soul-power.

Tantra, itself a synthesis, rests upon the truth that Shakti and Brahman, the two poles of being whose essential unity is the secret of existence … and to raise nature in man into manifest power of spirit is its method, gathering up the whole nature for the spiritual conversion.

The second half of this chapter will be the next reading.
