Synthesis of Yoga

The book Synthesis of Yoga is Sri Aurobindo’s principle work on his method of Integral Yoga; he offers a most thorough and detailed explanation.

This reading is of the first half of Chapter 14, The Power of the Instruments, page 729.

The heightened power of the instruments of our normal Nature is part of the Yoga of Self-Perfection. The object is to make the nature a fit instrument for divine works. For the purposes of this life, the physical body is a base for all inner action, as well. The body is given to us as one necessary instrument; it is to be used, but not neglected nor abused nor hurt nor suppressed. It is imperfect, as are also the vital being, heart, mind and reason; all must and shall undergo a transformation.

“Finally we shall realize the truth that this being we are is or can become whatever it has the faith and will to be, – for faith is only a will aiming at greater truth, – and cease to set limits to our possibility or deny the potential omnipotence of the Self in us, the divine Power working through the human instrument.”
