Synthesis of Yoga

Resuming on page 361 the second half of Chapter IX The Release of the Ego in Part Two The Yoga of Integral Knowledge.

Sri Aurobindo stresses that nothing half-way, attractive, exclusive or high-pinnacled is to be sought by the seeker of knowledge of an integral Yoga. He must continuously soar to the utmost height, for it is the absolute union of the soul with the Transcendent that is the goal.

In the path of Knowledge an uncompromising abolition of the ego-sense, at its very source, must be done; one may attempt this abolition by a constant fixing of one's thought on the One and Infinite in itself, or everywhere. If done persistently, in the end this changes one's mental outlook not only on oneself, but on the whole world. Result: a kind of mental realization ... which deepens eventually into spiritual experience ... realization in the substance of our being.

Synthesis of Yoga

The Release from Subjection to the Body Chapter VII, pages 343 - 349:

" ..... what seems is not the Truth, that the self is not the body or life or mind ..... these are only its forms ..... "

" ..... our first step must be to set right our mind ..... so that it may arrive at its own relation with the Self ..... to create a separation between the Prakriti and the Purusha. Purusha is the soul that knows and commands ..... mistakes this physical working which we call the body for himself .... forgets that he is so much greater than the physical form ..... he is the Master ..... it is not fit the Master should be enslaved to his own workings, the Transcendal imprisoned in a form which exists only as a trifle in its own being."

" ..... mind will come to know the Purusha seated within it ..... witness of the movements .... perceiver of experiences ..... this detachment can be made so normal ..... carried so far ... this is the initial liberation of the mental being from servitude to the body ..... for by right knowledge put into practice liberation comes inevitably."

Synthesis of Yoga

Part II The Yoga of Integral Knowledge, Chapter Five: Renunciation page 326 through page 331, to be continued with the next reading.

" ..... by renunciation we seize upon the falsehoods ..... that have overgrown and perverted our nature ..... pluck up their roots and cast them out of our way so that they shall no longer hamper by their persistence, resistance, recurrence the happy and harmonious growth of our divine living. Renunciation is an indispensable instrument of our perfection."

" ..... our object is the fulfillment of the Divine in the human being ..... renunciation of attachment ..... craving of desire in the senses and the heart, of self-will in the thought and action ..... of egoism in the center of the consciousness ..... the three knots by which we are bound to our lower nature and if we can renounce these utterly, there is nothing else that can bind us."

Sri Aurobindo: Synthesis of Yoga

This reading picks up on page 312, middle of Chapter 3 The Purified Understanding of Part II: The Yoga of Integral Knowledge.

" ..... what we mean by the understanding and by that higher faculty ..... which stands, to the developed intellect, much in the same relation as that intellect stands to the half-animal reason of the undeveloped man...... the nature of the purification necessary before the understanding can rightly fulfill its part in the attainment of right knowledge ..... All impurity is a confusion of working, a departure of dharma (sankara) the right action of things ..... pure and helpful to our perfection .....usually the result of ignorant confusion ..... "

"The second cause of impurity in the understanding is the illusion of the senses ..... A third cause of impurity in the understanding ..... an improper action of the will to know ..... a more or less obstinate will to ignore the truth in other ideas and opinions, cling to fragments of a truth ..... "

" ..... necessary to have the power of dismissing all thought ..... to think not at all ..... a power ..... a profound and pregnant stillness.... silence from which all words are born ....."

Synthesis of Yoga

Resuming with Part Two The Yoga of Integral Knowledge, Chapter IX The Release from the Ego. This reading will be the beginning half of the chapter: page 356 through the bottom of page 361.

Although the formation of the ego both mental and vital was necessary for creating out of matter a conscious individual, the necessary means for the conscious individual to find his true Person is by the dissolution of the ego; the conquest of the ego is the one thing supremely worth doing.

"The greatest service to humanity, the surest foundation for its true progress, happiness and perfection is to prepare or find the way by which the individual and the collective man can transcend the ego and live in its true self, no longer bound to ignorance, incapacity, disharmony and sorrow.... to find, know and possess the Divine existence, consciousness and nature and to live in it for the Divine is our true aim and the one perfection to which we must aspire."

Synthesis of Yoga

This reading is Chapter VI The Synthesis of the Disciplines of Knowledge in its entirety, pages 335 through 342.

"The central aim of Knowledge is the recovery of the Self, of our true self-existence, and this aim presupposes the admission that our present mode of being is not our true self-existence."

"We conceive of ourselves falsely, we see ourselves as we are not ..... this falsity is the root of a general perversion, confusion and suffering ..... our personal life and our communal life ..... are founded on a falsity ..... although through all this error a growing truth continually seeks to express itself."

" ..... our primary aim in knowledge ..... to realise our own supreme Self ..... the pressing need of the individual, to arrive at the truth of his own being, set right its disorders, confusions ..... so that our whole existence may find their right basis, may live in our highest self ..... and obey no other law than that which proceeds from our highest self ..... "

Synthesis of Yoga

Chapter 4 Concentration continued to its completion; pages 321 - 325, of Part II, The Yoga of Integral Knowledge.

Sri Aurobindo explains: " ..... concentraiton proceeds by the Idea, using thought, form and name as keys which yield up to the concentrating mind the Truth that lies concealed behind all thought, form and name ..... "

" ..... the mind is a thing that dwells in diffusion ..... it can only concentrate on one thing at a time and when not concentrated runs from one thing to another very much at random."

" ..... The first step in concentration must be always to accustom the discursive mind to a settled unwavering pursuit ..... on a single subject ..... undistracted by all lures and alien calls on its attention ..... common enough in our ordinary life ..... difficult when we have to do it inwardly ..... this inward concentration is what the seeker of knowledge must effect."

Synthesis of Yoga

Continuing with Part Two The Yoga of Integral Knowledge, Chapter VIII The Release from the Heart and the Mind.

Sri Aurobindo explains how life's characteristics are movement, action, attraction or repulsion. We give a mental value as we perceive and accept whatever comes, in the form of action, desire, liking, disliking, pleasure and pain. The result is a tangle of confusion. It is this confusion that is the evil of our psychological existence. And in that confusion the law that seems to reign, is the law of desire.

The universal Divine Being acts, moves, enjoys for the satisfaction of divine Delight whereas the individual in life moves, acts and enjoys for the satisfaction of desire. "The proper function of the life-energy is to do what it is bidden by the divine principle in us, to reach and enjoy what is given to it by that indwelling Divine, and not to desire at all."

"Equality, not indifference is the basis. Equal endurance, impartial indifference, calm submission to the causes of joy and grief without any reaction of either grief or joy .... are the basis of equality ..... but equality is not fulfilled till it takes it positive form of love and delight."

Synthesis of Yoga

This reading concludes Chapter 5, Renunciation, pages 331-334. In these pages Sri Aurobindo again emphasizes what we read in the teachings of the Gita, how subtle and difficult is freedom from egoism, the very thing which is demanded of us. He points out that renunciation (or self-denial) is an instrument; there is period for its use which passes.

"We must be prepared to leave behind on the path not only that which we stygmatise as evil but that which seems to us to be good, yet is not the one good ..... things which ..... seemed beneficial ..... once their work is done ..... become obstacles ..... even hostile forces when we are called to advance beyond them."

" .....march on to the wider kingdoms of God beyond .....everything is kept ..... restored for us ..... with a wonderful change and transfiguration into ..... the All-Light of Him ..... the mystery and the miracle that ceases not through the ages."

Synthesis of Yoga

Part Two, The Yoga of Integral Knowledge, Chapter IV, Concention. Beginning on page 317.

In this chapter, Sri Aurobindo explains that "Purity and concentration ..... are of the same status of being; purity is the condition in which concentration becomes effective ..... by concentration purity does its works .....impurity is a confusion entangled action of the different parts of the being ....."

"Comncentraton ..... removal of the thought from all distracting activities of the mind ..... concentration on the One by which the soul rises ..... into the one reality.

:By concentration on anything whatsoever we are able to know that thing ..... we must use this power to know not things, but the one Thing-in-itself ..... to become that which is above all things .... the pure and absolute Being ....."

The second half of this chapter will be the content of the next reading.
