Early Days of Matrimandir

Featured in the news a remembrance of 40 years ago today, when Mother sent a special message to those early Aurovilians who would begin the initial digging for what would become the foundation of Matrimandir: ‘The fraternity of collaboration; the aspiration towards Unity in Joy and Light. Blessings.’ Also in the news some announcements: a call for volunteers to do farm work and building at Windarra Farm in exchange for accommodation; another call goes out for a high level English teacher for Future School and, a chance to use writing skills in Sadhana Forest’s ‘This I Believe’ essay series. And finally a reminder to reserve an evening next weekend to hear the Auroville Choir sing a concert of Celtic songs.

“Earth Needs a place where men can live away from all national rivalries, social conventions, self-contradictory moralities and contending religions; a place where human beings, freed from all slavery to the past, can devote themselves wholly to the discovery and practice of the Divine Consciousness that is seeking to manifest. Auroville wants to be this place and offers itself to all those who aspire to live the Truth of tomorrow. For thousands of years we have been developing outer means, outer instruments, outer techniques for living and, in the end, those means and techniques are crushing us. The sign of the new humanity is a reversal of outlook and the understanding that inner means, inner knowledge and inner techniques can change the world and master it without crushing it. Auroville is the place where this new way of living is being worked out, it is a centre of accelerated evolution where man must begin to change his world by means of the power of the inner spirit. …words of the Mother 1968, 69
