The Legend of the Flute Player

“A long time ago in the Valley of the Great Mountains, there was a small town where lived all the greatest musicians in the land..
From anywhere in the valley, music could be heard day and night as all the musicians played their instruments so that they might be known as the best.
In this town there lived a young boy named Avvaiyar whose only wish was to play beautiful music for everyone. But Avvaiyar did not have an instrument to play ….”

Noel Parent’s book The Legend of the Flute Player, dramatized for the radio by Marion .

Growth Management for Greenbelt

The Auroville Integral Sustainability Insitute for the 4th time invited group of post graduate students of planning from Queens University, Canada to be part of learning exchange between Auroville and them.
Anna Geladi, Phillip Pirell along with Lalait came to our studio to invite us to a presentation on Growth Management Framework for Settlement in Auroville Green Belt, which would take place on Friday 15th at 4.30pm at SAIIER Conference room.
Both Anna and Phillipe found out the particularities of the space, and complexity of given topic, which requires a bit different approach to other planning in the world. Yet, the group of 12 students with their professor, managed to focus on the topic of development in green belt, and came up with suggestion, which we would hear at the presentation.

The Early Days Of Patrick

Patrick recounts his youthful adventures of hitchhiking along with his friends from France to India and eventually to Auroville. He recalls what drove him to join Auroville, his early days in the ashram and how it has evolved into the place we know today. From being a coolie helping with the construction of the Matrimandir to being the pioneer for surfing in Auroville, Patrick’s days are enriched with interesting anecdotes and experiences. He also shares with us what it means for him to be a true Aurovilian, and which of The Mother’s teachings resonate with him the most. His story is told to the backdrop of the song ‘In My Life’ by The Beatles, a song about loving the memories created in places that have changed for better or for worse.

Julia’s Smile

Book for children of all ages, written by Noel Parent, and read by Marlenka.

“…There once was magical land called Ayelen, where everyone smiled all the time.
They smiled while they worked,
they smiled while they played,
they smiled when it was sunny,
they smiled when it rained.
They even smiled while they were sleeping!….”

CAT on RC in Auroville

Friday 6th October there was a CAT (Creative Auroville Together) gathering on Restorative Circles (RC) in Unity Pavillion, Auroville.
Together with the Cat team we explored what RC can offer us as a community, how do they work and why do we have them.
RC is a community process designed to hold space for those in conflict.
There are 3 stages designed to identify the key factors in the conflict, reach agreements on next steps, and evaluate the results.
As circles form they invite shared power, mutual understanding, self – responsibility and effective action within the community.
The process is voluntary and open to all. Anyone can call a circle, anyone can be named to be invited to a circle and anyone can contact the facilitator and request to be included.
Most of the participants find RC a powerful tool to be used as one of Auroville`s conflict resolution options.
How to call a circle? Send a mail to restorative@auroville.org.in or speak in person to L`aura, Janet, Shanti, Helene or Kati.
Two day regular workshops will be offered (see News and Notes).
Also interesting to know that RC practices development began with the work of Dominic Barker in Rio de Janeiro in the mid 90`s in the favelas and continues with a growing community both in Brazil and internationally

KALVI – Our Story

KALVI (Education in Tamil) was created by a group of educators engaged with Integral Education in Auroville. The unit focuses on researching and implementing games and activities for didactic purposes.
These games/activities are designed to nurture a child’s inner awareness.
KALVI is presently exploring and researching “Aurogames”, educational games developed by Auroculture. She arrived at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, in 1971, and moved to Auroville in the mid 1990s. She was asked by the Mother to create educational games, which she called “Aurogames”. Auroculture has given KALVI “Aurogames” to use and expand upon.
KALVI ‘s imminent plan is to develop educational materials to expand the six faculties of consciousness (thinking, seeing, hearing, speaking, vital and body). To make this work happen any support is greatly appreciated.
